A.Y. McDonald honored for providing employee financial security
An independent panel of benefits experts selected A.Y. McDonald Mfg. Co. as one of The Principal 10 Best Companies for Employee Financial Security in 2008. The company earned national acclaim for standing by their employees and finding ways to maintain and expand benefits, rather than slash them.
The Principal Financial Group sponsors the program, which is now in its seventh year. It honors growing companies for their commitment to their employees’ financial security. Calling their unwavering commitment to their employees “remarkable,” judges applauded A.Y. McDonald and the other winners for expanding wellness and preventative care programs, as well as for continuing to share significantly in the cost of health insurance.
“What they’re doing is simply not putting any more burden on the employee,” said 10 Best judge Nevin Adams, editor-in-chief of plansponsor magazine and www.plansponsor.com. “That’s no small feat, given what’s happened with costs. That’s a big commitment.”
Judges also cited winners for ramping up benefits communication and education -- including sessions on investing in uncertain economic times -- and their efforts to boost retirement plan savings.
“Against the backdrop of a slowing economy, The Principal 10 Best Companies once again demonstrate that an investment in employee financial security is an investment in company financial security,” said Renee Schaaf, vice president at The Principal. “They attribute their low turnover and high productivity to top-notch benefits. That has a direct impact on the bottom line.”

Customers and vendors enjoyed a delicious meal, a live band and a poker tournament.
The Weatherford store more than doubled its size in January 2008, when it moved to the new 13,800-square-foot warehouse and sales office with a 5.5-acre pipe yard. This summer, the Odessa branch opened a new 6,000-square-foot shipping and receiving warehouse in order to better serve its customers in West Texas.
City Pipe’s motto for the past 66 years has been: “Depend on us, we perform.”
In conjunction with the anniversary celebration and open house, City Pipe employees from Hobbs, N.M., and Odessa, Texas, held their fourth annual esop meeting. Dozens of employees and their spouses enjoyed learning more about the Employee Stock Ownership Plan and its benefits, recognizing outstanding employees and taking home door prizes.
