2011 AHR Expo setting new records for a Western event

With several weeks still remaining before the 2011 AHR Expo in Las Vegas, January 31 February 2, show management reported that it was already bigger than the largest Western event ever held, which was in Anaheim, Calif., in 2004. Nearly 1,900 exhibiting companies had already reserved more than 374,000 square feet of booth space. This represents a 15% increase in both the number of exhibiting companies and booth space reserved.

These numbers include 100 first-time exhibitors and nearly 400 international companies from 31 different countries. In addition, visitor pre-registration was running ahead of last year’s AHR Expo in Orlando that attracted 45,000 registered HVAC/R professionals (28,582 registered visitors). The Orlando attendance set a new record for Southeast HVAC/R events.

“Based on these early indicators, we expect a very strong event in Las Vegas,” said Clay Stevens, president of International Exposition Company, which produces and manages the AHR Expo. “We believe the improving economy and the fact that it is being held in the West for the first time in seven years are the main reasons for this enthusiastic response.” Stevens added that AHR Expo covers all segments of the HVAC/R industry, including the new solar and green technologies that are experiencing strong growth.

Increasing profitability on robust revenue growth in November

American Supply Association members reported growth for the seventh consecutive month, showing a 7.9% improvement in per workday revenues during the month of November 2010 as compared to the same month in 2009 and down only 11.1% against 2008. Members are now ahead of last previous year-to-date by 2.0% on a per day basis. As there was one more workday in November 2010 than in 2009 and two more than 2008, the raw monthly revenues for the industry members were up 12.7% for the month vs. 2009 and down only 1.7% as compared to two years ago.

Consistent with October 2010, almost half of all distributors in November again reported reduced margins in 2010 as compared to 2009, with only about a third reporting improving margins. There is no longer a clear distinction on margin trend based upon the size of distributors.

After 20 consecutive months of declining inventories, ASA members for the second consecutive month put additional inventory on the shelves by adding 1.0% of inventory as compared to 2009 but still have reduced by 11.3% as compared to 2008. Inventory turns are finally on the rise and are beginning to improve, as 12-month sales growth now exceeds the inventory increases. In accounts receivable, days-sales outstanding have decreased by a whopping 2.0 days versus 2009.

The trend of reduced head count has stopped after two continuous years of decline. Again, for the second consecutive month, there was a growing movement of an equal number of distributors reporting an increase in employment as those that reported reduced employment against 2009.

American Standard Brands® employees take USGBC Green Building training

American Standard Brands employees voluntarily took a green building professional preparation course to better understand what makes a building green.

This educational program was conducted by the New Jersey chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council and is the LEED® certification preparatory class taken by architects, engineers, developers and other commercial users of American Standard plumbing products.

In partnership with the N.J. Department of Labor and Workforce Development, the training was funded by a grant awarded by the federal American Reinvestment and Recovery Act to help USGBC-NJ chapter members obtain LEED credentials, providing them with a competitive edge when vying for green-oriented work.

More than 20 American Standard employees participated in the on-site, eight-hour training over two evenings, learning the fundamentals of green design, construction and operations and overall building high performance.

US Air Conditioning Distributors honored by Waste Reduction Awards

US Air Conditioning Distributors was named a winner in California’s Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) 2010 Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP). “WRAP acknowledges businesses throughout California for implementing practices that help protect the environment and preserve our natural resources,” said CalRecycle director Margo Reid Brown.

US Air Conditioning installed a natural gas fueling station and purchased 17 clean-burning natural gas-powered trucks, which produce only 5% of the emissions of a diesel truck of the same size. Also, the company produces almost all of its electricity for its main 250,000-square-foot location in the City of Industry with one of the largest solar cell arrays in the U.S. At 850 kw, it produces enough electricity to power more than 400 homes.

US Air Conditioning’s mercury thermostat recycling program and their investments in on-site solar generation and natural gas-powered trucks also illustrates the company’s commitment to saving California’s resources.
